A strong opioid prescription drug called oxycodone is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is a member of the medication class known as opioid analgesics and functions by attaching to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord.
There are several different oxycodone dosage forms, including immediate-release and extended-release dosage forms. Extended-release oxycodone is used for chronic pain that needs constant care, whereas immediate-release oxycodone is frequently used for acute pain.
